Caodian Fm
Type Locality and Naming
North-central Anhui. The Caodian Fm was named by the Anhui Party of Regional Geological Survey in 1978. The typical section is situated at Dawushan northeast of Caodian, Fengyang County, Anhui Province.

Lithology and Thickness
The lower part of the Caodian Fm is composed of gray-white, grayish purple very thick-bedded quartzose conglomerate and ferruginous quartzose conglomerate, bearing a lot of poorly sorted, well-rounded and different sized pebbles (mainly 1 to 3 cm in diameter), which are dominated by quartzite, secondly by phyllite, schist and marble. The detritus are mostly derived from the underlying strata. The upper part, consist of purple thin-bedded ferruginous pebbly sandstone and ferruginous siltstone. When the iron is enriched, it can form a lenticular poor hematite ore. The thickness varies from 0 to 21 m.

The Caodian Fm overlies unconformably the sandy phyllite
Upper contact
Ferruginous phyllite of the underlying Songji Fm of Fengyang Gr.
Regional extent
North-central Anhui. It is limitedly exposed in Huainan to Fengyang and Huoqiu County

Depositional setting
The formation belongs to the deposit of the littoral shingle beach facies, the grain size generally showing a tendency to coarsening in lower part and to fine in upper part.
